In normal Hispanic naming traditions a parent will look at choosing Hispanic baby names which include a patronymic system (which means "son of"). They do this by deriving an individual's last name by adding either one of the patronymic forms to it such as "ez", "iz" or "az". So if they were to choose the father's first name which was say Fernando they would then change it to "Fernandez" which means "Son of Fernando".
Often the origins of Hispanic baby names is associated with place names, those which are related to mythology and history as well as having their origins in colors, plants and other types of nature. Some of the names that a parent may choose may have either fictional, historical, characteristic or religious origins. Often a place name would be used as a second surname and would be preceded by the word "de" or "del" (meaning "from" or "from the") so for example if your surname was "del Monte" you would be "from the mountain".
Often an Hispanic baby's name can physically describe the person. So for example if the person is thin, fat, big, small, has a fair complexion or dark complexion then their name will tell you what the characteristics of that person are. So if you were called Roberto Gordo (it is actually showing that you are Roberto the fat) whilst Roberto Delgado would show that the you are Roberto the Thin and so on. As you can see both of these names provide you with a physical description of who Roberto is.
Plus an Hispanic baby's name can tell us what occupation their parents or family are in. So say for example your name was Roberto Panadero then people would know that the occupation of your family was bakers as when translated into English it means Roberto the Baker.
What is important to remember is that many Hispanic baby names will originate from Spanish history and culture as many of them originally came to the US and other Latin American countries from Hispania Iberian Peninsula in Spain. To this day you will find that Hispanic families in the USA will often refer back to their Spanish roots to provide a name for their new child.
