Telugu baby names are becoming very popular . In India most
children's names are based on a variety of systems and naming
conventions. These will often vary from region to region and
in many cases will be influenced by the parent's religion and
caste. The names that an Indian parent will choose for their
child may also come from mythology.
However the people of Southern India especially those from
Telugu will choose Telugu baby names using their ancestral hometown
or their family's profession. So when a new baby is named in
Telugu the child will often have their surname placed before their
given name.
However what also needs to be noted is that the population in
India speak a wide variety of different languages and nearly every
major religion you can think of in the world is represented in this
country. So because of these variations there can often be
some subtle yet confusing differences in names and naming styles
right through out the country. For example up until recently
the use of a second name often did not exist in Southern India
until modern legal systems were introduced. Because of this
the introduction of second names was brought in order to reduce the
occurrence where people's names would clash.
Also for many Indians you will find that their birth name is
different from what is considered to be their official name.
Often a baby's birth name will start with a letter that is
considered to be auspicious on the basis of their horoscope.
In some cases a child may end up with three names. It will
often consist of a unique first name, a unique middle name and then
the last name which is often the family name (much the same as in
Western society). But they may also be given a god's,
grandfather or grandmother's name as well (this all depends on the
sex of the child).
Yet for a long time Telugu baby names would only be given a
single name and this could be chosen in one of three ways.
Often the people from the Telugu region of India would choose names
based on the following:-
1. The name or the town or village they came from.
2. By using the family name for example they may call their
child Pulithevar.
However under British rule Indians were expected to follow
English procedures and because of this things changed considerably
in the Telugu region. So soon the way in which the Telugu
baby names were devised became more westernized and often today you
find that they have a more western connotation to them.
